Artificer Specializations

An Artificer of Obscurity is an expert spy, able to use their abilities to create magic and cast spells for more subtle ends. They find work as expert spies, their intelligence and charisma enhanced by the magic granted to them by the Magnate of Obscurity, creating one of the most effective spy organizations in the world.

When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you select your preferred method of spying from one of the options below, gaining the corresponding proficiencies.

Social Engineer. You gain proficiency with the Deception and Persuasion skills, as well as with the Disguise Kit.

Cat Burglar. You gain profession with the Acrobatics and Stealth skills, as well as with the Forgery Kit.

Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Obscurity Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don't count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Artificer Level Spell
3rd Distort Value, Silent Image
5th Mirror Image, Nystul's Magic Aura
9th Hypnotic Pattern, Major Image
13th Greater Invisibility, Hallucinatory Terrain
17th Mislead, Seeming

Beginning at 3rd level, you gain knowledge of how to craft the key item of your specialization: the Void Ring. Whenever you finish a long rest, you can infuse the powers of the Void into a nonmagical ring, converting it into a Void Ring. The ring becomes magical, though it appears nonmagical to any spells or abilities such as Detect Magic, and can be used as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells.

You select the benefits granted by your Void Ring at the time of its creation, choosing the type of ring from one of the options below.

Charming Ring. Your Void Ring magically highlights your finer features, making you more trustworthy. While you wear this ring, you may roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the total when making a Charisma (Persuasion) or Charisma (Deception) check. Additionally, you gain the ability to take the Disengage action as a bonus action.

Obscuring Ring. Your Void Ring hides your movements in shadow, making them harder to perceive. While you wear this ring, you may roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the total when making a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) or Dexterity (Stealth) check. Additionally, you gain the ability to take the Hide action as a bonus action.

Magnifying Ring. Your Void Ring manipulates light, allowing you to see some things more clearly. While you wear this ring, you may roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the total when making a Wisdom (Perception) or Intelligence (Investigation) check. Additionally, you gain the ability to take the Search action as a bonus action.

Living Ring. Your Void Ring is attuned to life, allowing you to more easily manipulate it. While you wear this ring, you may roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the total when making a Wisdom (Medicine) or Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. Additionally, you gain the ability to apply a potion to an allied creature as a bonus action.

Once you have created your Void Ring, you cannot change the benefit it grants until you finish a long rest or until you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher. If you create a new Void Ring, the previous one ceases to function.

At 5th level, you gain the ability to hide your infusions as mundane items, creating a Secret Gadget. When you create an Artificer Infusion, you may cause the item to appear as a mundane item of a similar size and shape, concealing its true nature until you use it.

A creature can only notice the deception once you use the item for its true abilities, or by physically inspecting the item for at least 1 minute, at which point it can must make an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your Spell Save DC to notice the effect. Your Secret Gadget appears nonmagical to spells and abilities such as Detect Magic, as if it were under the effect of the Nystul's Magic Aura spell.

You may only have one Secret Gadget at a time. If you create an additional Secret Gadget, the illusion surrounding the previous one dissipates.

At 9th level, you improve the capabilities of your Void Ring. Choose two of your proficiencies with skills or tools. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen proficiencies, as long as you are able to benefit from the effects of your Void Ring.

Additionally, when you cast an artificer spell of 1st level or higher through your Void Ring, you may roll a d10, and you gain a bonus to one of the spell's damage rolls equal to the number rolled plus your Intelligence modifier.

At 15th level, your Void Ring grants you a +2 bonus to your AC, as the magic of the ring works to conceal your true position from attackers.

Additionally, you may refocus the power of your Void Ring to improve a single skill dramatically. As an action, you may suppress the effects of your Void ring for one hour, losing the normal benefits of the ring for the duration. When you do so, you may select one skill, which you do not need to be proficient with. You have advantage on all ability checks using the chosen skill for the duration.

Once you use this feature of the ring, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest.
